Voodoo and resistance
 

Haitian voodoo "is a populist religion from which the freedom-fighting ex-slave heroes of the past drew inspiration in that nationalist struggle prior to independence in 1804"
 
though, like all populism, it can sour into authoritarianism:
"Under the regimes of the notorious Dr Duvalier ('Papa Doc') and his son, voodoo was elevated virtually to the status of a state religion" (96)
