For instance, when we argue that "the violence and inequalities of modern society" somehow arise "from structures of rational management and paternalistic care" (516)
they tie this, somewhat indirectly, to the loss of the ability to "recreate ourselves by recreating our relations with one another" (514), which seems like a reformulation of the "freedom to shift and renegotiate social relations" (defined in somewhat slippery ways throughout the book, but defined in these terms on 398) -- one of their "three forms of freedom" [see separate note]
