"[T]hey tell the 'tolerated' person to do what he wishes, that he has every right to follow is own nature, that the fact that he belongs to a minority does not in the least mean inferiority, etc. But his 'difference'--or better, his 'crime of being different'--remains the same both with regard to those who have decided to tolerate him and those who have decided to condemn him. No majority will ever be able to banish from its consciousness the feeling of the 'difference' of minorities. I shall always be eternally, inevitably conscious of this."
