On being an "example of a process"

Hayot 40: "No one likes to think of themselves as yet another example of a process (or, for that matter, a generic member of a social group). No matter that sometimes, of course, we are the products of processes and social groups. Most people don't like to be treated that way because it makes us feel unvalued, unrecognized. It makes us feel unattended to, in our being."

see the "seven year itch" example on 39

in that example, "the therapist has not treated you as a historical individual; they have discussed the particularities of your situation, and your experience of that situation, as though they were epiphenomena of a larger, repeatable [generic] process"
