Militarism, racism, and the decline of hegemony

Beck 451: "With the United States unable to muster the economic strength to maintain even semi-consensual hegemony around the world, militarism is the next best option for managing discontents abroad and at home. If some growing portion of the globe's working population has to be excluded from formal employment due to slowing growth, racism provides the most efficient sorting mechanism for determining who is to be left out in the cold."

shades of what Slobodian calls the "ethno-economy" (see Slobodian 23) or perhaps the first two of the "three hards" ("hardwired human nature, hard borders, and hard money" (Slobodian 23))
