George Duby's "total sphere of history"

George Duby calls upon historians to expand the "boundless sphere of total history" and "include, for example, the history of honor, bread, suicide, and birth" (Duden's summation, vii)

"To take up Duby's bold challenge demands first of all that we examine the assumptions and prejudices that have created the narrow boundaries of historical inquiry and have excluded sensory perceptions, hunger, pleasure, and pain from historical life"
