Graber and Wengrow note that it is Franz Boas (see my notes on him elsewhere) who carries out important initial research on the Kwakiutl, originators of the potlatch
 
(he notes that the potlatch ceremonies are only held during part of the year--they are apparently another instance of a "double morphology" society; see 108)
