Ernst Bloch on utopia

John Brenkman: Bloch observed that utopias may only have a "discontinuous history," but, nevertheless "that latent utopian possibilities are contained in the experiences of freedom and self-organization which social groups and classes possess, intermittently and fragmentedly, in their everyday existence, political practices, myths, and artistic endeavors"

[is this different from the notion of the temporary autonomous zone?]

a utopia could be more permanent--"concrete"--in a work of art

"concrete insofar as it stems from what is realized aesthetically in the artwork"

They can be known "by the power of images [or] in the situations and forms of conflict and resolution [works of art] feature"

contrast against Benjamin's "dialectical image"
