the "idea of recapitulation" involves Christ as a sort of reverse Adam (he is "recapitulating Adam in Himself," per Irenaeus)
Irenaeus also sees Mary as a reverse Eve ("virginal disobedience having been balanced in the opposite scale by virginal obedience")
"this is a striking development in the theory of recapitulation as it proposes Mary as a co-redemtrix with Christ" (132)
