A "musicological examination of possession"

Gilbert Rouget undertakes (1980) a musicological examination of possession

Rouget sees "trance" as an "active, agitated noise-induced state" (Lewis's summation, 9) and "ecstasy" as a "passive, tranquil, perfection of mystical experience"

Lewis describes this book as "ambitious" but also notes that it "confuses rather than clarifies"
