Samuel Huntington's 1993 essay "The Clash of Civilizations" (Foreign Affairs), later expanded into a book
an argument that "major global conflicts [in the future] would have teir roots in cultural disputes, and they would take place between two or more of the world's culturally distinct 'civilizations,' of which there were nine"
"Huntington was particularly worried about a conflict between [the West] and Islam," which he saw as a civilization which was "generally antagonistic"
Huntington: "Wherever one looks along the perimeter of Islam, Muslims have problems living peacablly with their neighbors"
