"Financialization"

Beck 282: "Reluctant to invest in new business lines or expanded capacity that can't provide the required rates of return, business[es] have instead routed growing shares of their capital into asset markets, whether through share buybacks, increased dividend payouts, or other financial instruments. These investments are certainly profitable, but the only thing they grow is paper wealth. Financialization does nothing to grow the part of the economy that actually makes things for people to use."
